Testing and Certification Services for Gardening Gloves and Oven Gloves

Gardening gloves and oven gloves prevent users from the dangerous of cuts and heat. They are essential in many work environments and daily use situation so they must be duly tested and certified to ensure that they will provide adequate protection to the users.

Gardening Gloves and Oven Gloves – CE Marking & Testing Standards

Gardening gloves are considered Category I PPE. While a third-party certification is not required for Category I PPE products, manufacturers can demonstrate the safety and quality of their gardening glove products by conducting testing with a reliable third-party laboratory to stand out in the market.

Oven gloves are considered Category II PPE which requires certification by a Notified Body in Europe. Our laboratory in Spain is one such Notified Body (No. ) and is able to certify CE Marking for gardening gloves and oven gloves.

Besides, the below standards per regulations are recommended for retailers to understand their goods’ performance before putting them up for sale to ensure the protective performance:

Gardening Gloves

  • EN ISO /BS EN ISO : Protective gloves. General requirements and test methods
  • EN 388/BS EN 388:+A1: Protective gloves against mechanical risks of abrasion, blade cutting, tearing and perforation

Oven Gloves

  • EN ISO /BS EN ISO : Protective gloves. General requirements and test methods
  • EN 407/BS EN 407: Protective gloves against thermal risks (heat and/or fire)

Gardening Gloves and Oven Gloves – UKCA Marking

Gardening gloves are not currently required to obtain a third-party certification or bear the UKCA Marking. However, manufacturers can choose to conduct testing with a reliable third-party laboratory to demonstrate the safety and quality of their gardening glove products to differentiate themselves in the market.

When placing oven gloves on the Great Britain market, businesses need to obtain a UKCA Marking and meet the requirements of Regulation /425 on Personal Protective Equipment. This requires certification by an Approved Body. Our laboratory Eurofins MTS Consumer Product Testing UK is one such UK Approved Body (No. ) and is able to certify UKCA marking for these gloves.

Safety Standards and Certifications for Custom Oven Mitts

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is defined as equipment designed and manufactured to be worn or held by a person for protection against one or more risks to that person’s health or safety. Following the approval of Regulation (EU) /425, domestic oven gloves and mitts have been now being categorized as PPE. Based on risk they are Category II PPE and therefore required to carry the CE mark and Conformity Assessment by a Notified Body before they can be sold in the EU.

Updated Planning for Transition

  • April 21, – it is a legal requirement that all new products placed into the market conform to Regulation (EU) /425. They were not considered PPE under Directive 89/686/EEC.

Note: If the product bears the retailer’s logo, the retailer is said to be the manufacturer (company putting the product in the market) and therefore the supply chain only starts when they sell to their individual customers. Stock in their warehouse/distribution center is not yet in the supply chain and therefore cannot be sold after April 20, unless it has the CE mark and the Conformity Assessment.

As Category II products, oven gloves and mitts will require certification by a Notified Body before they can be sold in the EU. For Category II products, the necessary criteria for EU type-examination (Module B) are set out in Annex V, followed by conformity to type based on internal production control (Module C), set out in Annex VI. EU type-examination certificates issued under Module B in Annex V will have a validity period of five years.

Updated Information for Notified Body - SGS

For Category II and III PPE products, SGS United Kingdom Ltd. are UKAS accredited for ISO and appointed as a Notified Body for both the outgoing Directive 89/686/EEC and incoming Regulation (EU) /425, making SGS the ideal partner for European PPE product compliance.
